Drug detoxification can be a variable process for each individual. This means that the process that works for some does not work for others and how they are able to work through the process.

What is Detox?

Detox is the process the body goes through following the intake of a substance to remove it from the body. The substance can be food, alcohol, or drugs. Through the detox process, the body works to eliminate and remove toxins and excess amounts of substances that are unhealthy for the system.

Drug detox is the process that occurs while an individual is going through withdrawal. While these two terms are typically used interchangeably, detox refers to the physical processes and time the body needs to remove substances from the system. Withdrawal describes the symptoms of the detox process. When an individual goes through withdrawal, the body detoxes and eliminates harmful and unnecessary substances.

Who Needs Drug Detox?

When entering drug detox, many individuals would benefit from the process specifically. While individuals can detox from any number of products, foods, or substances, drug detox is critical for attempting to alter their lifestyle to reflect sober health goals.

When it comes to who needs drug detox, anyone choosing to change their lifestyle to want sobriety does need to go through the detox process. However, not everyone needs to attend a detox program. Detox programs most often cater to individuals in extreme circumstances. For example, individuals addicted to alcohol may need to participate in a detox program because of the availability and overwhelming presence of alcohol in American culture. In addition, individuals who cannot maintain a drug-free living situation and those who do not have a structured support system to support their sobriety and detox would benefit from a drug detox program.

A detox program can also be a requirement of legal consequences and mental health treatment. For example, many individuals will need to undergo a structured detox program before entering a treatment facility or may be placed in one due to their behavior. While addiction treatment following detoxification is most beneficial to individuals choosing to change their lifestyle, individuals not entering treatment after an intervention are often equally supported through detox programming to move them in the correct direction.

What Does a Detox Program Entail?

Detox programs are often not pleasantly remembered. But not for the effectiveness of the program and what it entails. Detox programs are most beneficial to individuals going through initial withdrawal from a substance. Because detox includes many physical, mental, and emotional changes in the body that can make the situation tumultuous, many detox programs are inpatient and require a client to say onsite through the detox process.

Individuals who enter a detox program typically arrive within several hours of their last use. Withdrawal, for most substances, occurs within the first 8 to 12 hours and will peek around the 72-hour mark. For most individuals, the first three days of treatment are uncomfortable, emotional, and traumatic for the body.

When an individual arrives at a detox program, they complete an entrance examination and questionnaire to determine their immediate needs and physical health. Clients are monitored by medical professionals who can often administer medication to support the withdrawal process and reduce the adverse side effects. As soon as the client can, they are strongly encouraged or even required to attend treatment. This can include individualized counseling, group therapy, or structured 12-step program meetings. By moving a client into this process as quickly as possible, individuals can begin the healing process and receive structured support to encourage their continued progression.
